Vaping and E Cigarettes by Luke Diulus

With the amount of tobacco decreasing, teens and young adults tend to choose E-cigarettes and Vaping. This will be a discussion about the epidemic, and look into why it is so addictive and why so many people chose this. We will also look into the effects and what doctors have to say about the epidemic, as well as the different types. We are also going to look into the nicotine addiction that vaping and other forms of e-cigarettes causes and comparison to traditional smoking. This paper will discuss the social effects, and show some examples of the vaping and e-cigarette epidemic. Underage smoking and purchasing of the vape products can put teens in the same boat for underage illegal activities like alcohol and drug use. Also in this paper, the solutions and history of vaping will be explained as well. The examples that will be explained in this paper will also be beneficial because they can give parents a idea of what to look for in their children’s behaviors.
History
Vaping is a trend that people and young adults have used in place of traditional smoking that has been around for years. Smoking was popular among  adolescents in the early 20th century. Until 1880,  traditional smoking were rolled by hand, but in 1881, a man named James Albert Bonsack created a cigarette rolling machine to make it easier and quicker to make cigarettes.(stein) However, now with all of the harmful effects of traditional smoking, people have turned to vaping and e-cigarettes. This includes older people who may have smoked for a lifetime, or younger adults and teens who did not smoke before all of the harmful cancer causing effects were found about smoking. The true history of vaping is that it has been around for thousands of years. Vaping was first introduced in ancient times by crushing up herbs and spices in a pot using hot stones. Then in the early 1900’s, the idea of an e-cigarette was invented by a man named Joseph Robinson. The idea really never  become known, until 1963 when the people of the United States burned a record of 523 billion cigarettes, Herbert Gilbert came up with an alternative to smoking by making an e-cigarette, which at first was made by using a liquid in a metal tube in the shape of a cigarette and burning the liquid by a battery. This was an important event, because in 1964 the surgeon general came up with a machine (smithsonian).
Effects on Society
The effects on society from vaping and e-cigarettes are first of all, being out in public and people vaping and using the products that can annoy or harm other people, or just cause an annoyance to people in public. Another effect is the nicotine that can be in the juice that goes inside the vape or e-cigarette. Also, just like the health risk associated with smoking, and that of second hand smoke, can be associated with vaping as well; this is because in vaping with the vapor being inhaled into lungs is not good even if it does not have nicotine in it and is just fruit or sweet flavored. Going on from that, for instance with the whole vaping in public, imagine walking at the outlets or walkingand like the health risk associated with smoking first hand and not only that of second hand smoke and that can be associated in vaping as well because in vaping with the vapor being inhaled into the lungs that is not good even if it does not have nicotine in it and just fruit or sweet flavor. Going on from that, for instance with the whole vaping in public imagine walking at the outlets or walking downtown and something vaping and blowing a cloud of smoke right into your face and you have to smell whatever the scent of the juice is and it gets  downtown and someone vaping and blowing a cloud of smoke right into your face and you have to smell whatever the scent of the juice and it gets frustrating. Vaping can also be costl, because the parts can be expensive for the vapes. Another effect on society is if a teen is rebelling against their parents, vaping may lead to doing other drugs or drinking alcohol, which can have similar or worse effects. This can also affect students and their performance in school, and later on in life in jobs have a effect. frustrating.  Vaping can be costly because  the parts can be expensive for the vapes. Another effect on society is if someone is rebelling against their parents, they may also do drugs or drink alcohol underage which can have similar or worse effects on the students and their performance in school and later on in life in jobs have a effect.

Examples
One example of vaping is in high school like with the crack down on kids getting caught with vapes or vaping. There have also been instances in which people have sold vapes to underage kids because of the age requirement attached to vapes and e-cigarettes. One thing with vapes is people make a lot of money with vapes and can do cool tricks with vapes and that can be why young people who do not want to smoke cigarettes but can get vapes and use that to be cool. No one likes walking down the street and walking through a cloud of smoke. This visualization is important because of our senses seeing that image of the smoke could make a connection between someone who has dealt with this issue and does not know how to express it. These examples are important because they are in everyday use in public areas and vaping also has less regulation like with traditional smoking you can not smoke in certain areas because the smell and smoke, but with vaping there is no bad smell just sweet smells sometimes and also not a lot of smoke which people can vape in public secretly
Solutions
Some solutions to vaping are schools being more stern about their rules on vaping in school and also them not allowing kids to bring them to school or having designated areas. For solutions educating others on vaping like the parents of the kids vaping and also the students either vape themself or also friends or fellow classmates who are around the students maybe when they are vaping.  An other could be more actions from the government and also the school districts with restrictions and discipline of the kids smoking or vaping in public schools. With the school districts and government stepping forward, they can possibly help the school districts have classes that are maybe 15 to 30 minutes every month explaining the effects of vaping and e-cigarettes and its harm to the people consuming it.  Additionally, also the addiction to the nicotine or feeling it may give the user. This can be the same in underage drinking because they both are not regulated as much like traditional smoking is with all the rules that are in place with smoking in public and the regulations for underage. Additionally, the laws for smoking are also upheld whereas vaping and underage drinking are not really upheld and become more lenient
By bringing awareness of the negative effects on vaping would be an important step into helping its users become more educated on the issues.  Negative effects include addition and underage usage. Addiction with vape usage is similar to traditional tobacco, in which nicotine is present in the product. People tend to underestimate the effects of vaping and think that it is better than smoking yet it can have the same effects and amount of nicotine that traditional smoking does. Often people tend to start vaping to try to get away from traditional smoking and even some people have the misconception that vaping is not as bad or maybe even good but studies show that vaping can contain the same amount of nicotine found also in cigarettes. This is misunderstanding and can be solved or helped by professionals coming into schools to teach and inform parents, students, and also teachers. This can help in that that they can be informed and also know the effects of vaping.
Another solution is educating others such as parent and students themselves of the effects and signs to look out for. This is not only for the students and parents, but also teachers who may not have a lot of experience with vaping and may not know how to deal with it. The classes that could be offered to help would also be a helpful to inform administratives on what to do if someone gets caught vaping and also know how to treat it in the case of something going wrong with the kid because of the stuff they are putting in their body. In schools with the potential meetings, they could also invite and bring in medical professionals in order to prove an argument and also give statistics to help the audience visualize the epidemic and effect on people.
With all these solution ideas, administrators and parents and the government need to be aware that if they completely ban vaping and it can be used for other underage activities like traditional smoking, drinking underage, and also drug use. If you completely take away something then people will rebel and start smoking or doing those other activities underground or in secret because of fear that they will get caught because now it could be illegal and punishable. This also comes into another possible solution and that is to deal with now since someone bans it and people still want to do it, they will find a way to do it in secret and that creates a issue because they could act out or even break rules while vaping or underage drinking.  It would not be ideal to completely ban this but it would be beneficial to limit the areas in which people vape like with school not allowing people to vape in school building but possibly outside the school in a area in which not a lot of people walk in because of the clouds created from vapes. They should be more strict with rules about where people sleep.
Absurdity
Camus talks about how death and also talks about the 40s and vaping was first created around that time. This was absurd because in that time that he was talking about his story was the same time that the vaping and smoking were taking place. Canus as we learned in class was a french philosopher and also how he was a advocate about freedom and this ties into the topic of the epidemic about vaping because it shows how even if us as teenagers and adults should have freedom to learn from the negatives in our lives and do new things, we should use caution to navigate it. Camus devoted his life to being a philosopher and this show how we are supposed to
Conclusion
In conclusion, vaping is a true epidemic because it has become both a huge money making industry and also a substitute for traditional smoking. People have turned away from smoking because of all the research of how bad it is for you but vaping is a newer concept so people do not know about the long term effects of e-cigs and vapes. The people are often misinformed because they have seen that people claim that vaping is good and not a risk and have been fed the false information about vaping. Also, many think that the nicotine is less in vaping than it is in smoking and that is not true.  The information covered in this paper like the history, background, examples, solutions and also concluding this paper, hopefully people have a new understanding about vaping. When the paper talks about the information that could parents could learn during the meetings would be beneficial.
