Narcissism Epidemic
Each day is an opportunity to feel better than everyone else. To cherish power and superiority over everyone that is among their presence is one’s goal, to be admired and noticed by everyone in the room gives them an adrenaline rush that cannot be stopped once it has begun. Thinking about doing inhuman things and feeling no sense of sympathy or remorse towards their actions drives them to do what they please and want. Such ambition and desire of power that a narcissistic human being has is beyond the reach of a normal human being. Anything can cause them to snap and go into their own world of darkness and emotionless stage causing terrifying acts that a normal person would not think of doing. The way they zone out and interpret things scares those with morals, ethics, and sympathy. Having to deal with narcissistic people is a problem that society needs to look out for due to their unstable and unpredictable personalities. Actions that most people would never consider doing is something a human being with narcissistic personality disorder, or NPD, cannot avoid because of their mindset and inability to show any type of care to anyone or anything. There may be a way to stop people with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) from having such rage towards everything without showing remorse and making decisions that may put oneself or someone else in danger or in a crucial problem.
Narcissistic personality was first seen as something less than a mental disorder, something that not many found as a threat. Since the 1900’s, being a narcissist was something that people didn’t quite understand nor take much consideration to. From “1963 until around 2008”, the level of narcissistic behavior has increased tremendously in society causing the narcissistic epidemic (bigthing.com). “Narcissism is shown in people who have a more individualist culture” (bigthing.com). Pop culture, music, famous idols, and other factors play a role in how the narcissistic epidemic has risen over the decades.
The social effects that narcissistic personality disorder are effects upon the United States of America because each “generation that comes has a sense of individualism that leads to their narcissistic behaviors”. Such behaviors impacts the nation as a whole because everyone feels that their entitled to something and that they are more important than someone else. The narcissistic epidemic shows a large scale of disorder throughout the country and it is a negative impact because if a large population of the working class feels like they have more of right then someone else, it will be difficult to get people to work for someone and or to work with someone impacting the country economically.
Another social effect that narcissistic personality disorder brings is a large impact on the world because in america, “80% “of today’s people feel individually important (bigthing.com). This ideology can be spread across the world changing the minds of many across the globe causing a negative impact to society because everyone will turn against each other. A global impact from a narcissist can huge through politics because “at the same time, they act in their own best interest, putting the needs and interests of others at risk.” (Braun, Susanne). This shows that one person who is out to seek in the best interest of themselves can and will have a negative outcome to the globe. “Many people don’t see how a narcissist can express a negative impact on the entire world but narcissist have demonstrated that they don’t care about other people but themselves. The dark side, such as self-serving and manipulative acts, emerges when narcissists let their guard down.” shows how a narcissistic leader will show their bad side and will take action in a selfish manner because of their difficult and stressful times that they are having as a leader in a country (Braun, Susanne). Having a narcissistic leader can lead to negative effects and is something society should look after when selecting someone for a leadership position because a narcissist will take action in whatever they find appealing to themselves.
In the end, looking out for this narcissistic epidemic that has tremendously grown within the last four decades is something we should monitor more often and try to minimize the ideology of individualism and narcissistic behaviors because having so many people with the same mindset cannot and will not drive a country and a globe forward. We must keep a look out for narcissistic personality disorder and try to minimize it for the upcoming generations in order to prevent the world from having such profound thoughts of individualism.
All though narcissism is something that has not been fully understood to the point where it can be fully cured. Finding a solution to minimize actions and personalities that a narcissist goes through is possible. Studies, database, and surveys show that it is indeed possible to help those with narcissistic personality disorder.
A solution to minimize narcissistic personality disorder is finding a psychotherapist because speaking to someone about that self centered feeling narcissist get is helpful. Having thoughts of wiping out someone, the thrill of killing someone, the thought of being an individual person where everyone is a threat, maintaining a psychotic mentality with everyone and not being civil because the narcissistic personality disorder within one is overpowering is not under any circumstance acceptable to society today. Having such mentality is also unhealthy. This solution of talking to a professional doctor is a good solution because a psychotherapist can help a narcissist by making them understand who they really are. They help “increase your ability to understand and regulate your feelings. Understand and tolerate the impact of issues related to your self-esteem. Release your desire for unattainable goals and ideal conditions and gain an acceptance of what's attainable and what you can accomplish”(Pies, Ronald). Providing psychological help can minimize the actions and thoughts of a narcissist because it teaches them to become more responsible of their actions, be more ethical, and to not be so insensitive. Narcissistic personality disorder can occur to anyone, but it can be prevented and it can be cured or helped by the professional assistance of a medical doctor.
According to database and surveys, narcissistic personality disorder occurs at a “very large (N=34,653) epidemiologic survey of adults in the United States9 found that NPD was inversely related to age, with the greatest decline occurring after age 29. This seems rather odd for a condition that is supposed to represent a life-long pattern of maladaptive behavior!”(Pies, Ronald). Given database information and surveys, solutions to narcissistic personality disorder is to have. “A more prudent approach would be to refine our NPD criteria so as to address these deficiencies, and then field-test the revised NPD criteria in clinical settings. Then we need to begin careful genetic and neurobiological studies of NPD subjects, searching for biomarkers and endophenotypes”(Pies, Ronald). With more advanced research and better understanding of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, solving the narcissistic epidemic that is currently happening is possible.
Furthermore, narcissism, is most common in men given that “Men also tended to score higher on the leadership/authority scale, meaning they were more likely to exhibit qualities or assertiveness and the desire for power” (Firger, Jessica). With this information given about narcissism found mainly in men, we can target men to avoid narcissistic behavior within them.
Finding a solution narcissistic personality disorder that has now become an epidemic, is possible and can be reduced with proper approach of the situation. The best approach to narcissistic personality disorder and the epidemic is for the person with narcissistic personality disorder seek medical attention and open up to a specialist that can help them with their issues. Talking to a therapist and finding how to maintain it and become more responsible and have less selfish feelings.
